What is Patient Support Group (PSG)?
Patient support groups, also known as patient advocacy organizations, exist to provide resources for patients, families, and caregivers affected by a serious disease. These resources usually include educational materials, opportunities for peer-to-peer support, stimulating and supporting clinical and scientific research, and referrals to expert treating physicians and other healthcare providers.
OBJECTIVES
- To bring together people who are going through or have gone through similar experiences
- To fill a gap between medical treatment and the need for emotional support.
- To gain knowledge about one’s disease and treatment process
- To create awareness among the public, physicians, and other healthcare professionals.
- To maintain a healthy relationship with family
- To maintain a healthy quality of life
BENEFITS of joining the group
- Feeling less lonely, isolated or judged
- Reducing distress, depression, anxiety or fatigue
- Talking openly and honestly about your feelings
- Improving skills to cope with challenges
- Staying motivated to manage chronic conditions or stick to treatment plans
- Gaining a sense of empowerment, control or hope
- Improving understanding of a disease and your own experience with it
- Getting practical feedback about treatment options
- Learning about health, economic or social resources
Things to remember…
- Privacy : As a group member we can encourage other members to share their feeling and thought but can never force them to do so. If anyone is not willing to open up then we should value and respect his/her decision
- Confidentiality: Information, identity, thoughts and emotions of each and every member of the group will be kept confidential and restricted to the group members and disclosed only with their consent.
- Active listening: Active listening is a way of listening and responding to another person that improves mutual understanding. Individual should feel that his/her words are heard by other group members.
How to address the DIFFERENCE
SHOULD | SHOULD NOT |
---|---|
X: my hb% is decreased after 5th # of chemotherapy Y: Yes! It happens (if you know the reason) at times due to the effects of chemo. It is not your fault. Y: Okay! You can consult with your health care team regarding the issue. After getting the information the reason behind that would be clear to you. (if you do not know the reason) |
X: my hb% is decreased after 5th # of chemotherapy Y: Oh really? I don’t thing your treatment is going right coz I have also undergone chemotherapy and did not experience this. (wrong way) Y: This might be because you are not taking proper diet. You may take iron tablets for that. (Wrong way) |
Looking forward to see your active participation to make the objectives fulfilled and live a healthier life
