Mobile phones emit radiations and radiations are cause of cancer .So should we stop using mobile phones ??
This is a hot topic and every one has his opinion .But what is the scientific evidence that we have regarding this statement that mobile phones cause cancer ?
The main reasons why people are concerned that cell phones might have the potential to cause certain types of cancer or other health problems are as follows
• Cell phones emit radiofrequency radiation (radio waves),
• The number of cell phone users has increased rapidly..
• Over time, the number of cell phone calls per day, the length of each call, and the amount of time people use cell phones have increased.
Lets understand the science behind the radiofrequency radiation and its effect on human body
Radiofrequency radiation is a form of electromagnetic radiation. It is of two types
a) ionizing - x-rays, radon, and cosmic rays ( High energy)
b) non-ionizing -radiofrequency and extremely low frequency, or power frequency ( low energy)
Electromagnetic fields in the radiofrequency range are used for telecommunications applications, including cell phones, televisions, and radio transmissions.
Exposure to ionizing radiation, such as from x-rays, is known to increase the risk of cancer. But there is no data to support that non-ionizing radiation from radar, microwave ovens, cell phones increases cancer risk in humans .
The only consistently effect of radiofrequency radiation in humans is heating( eg microwave ovens ) .Same is the case with excessive use of cell phones which increases the local temperature, But is not significant enough.s
Association between radiation and cancer
Several studies have been undertaken to find association between radiation and brain tumors, such as gliomas, acoustic neuroma ,meningiomas , and salivary gland tumors .
Three large epidemiologic studies have examined the possible association between cell phone use and cancer:
a) Interphone, a case–control study
This study involved people from 13 countries . there was no concrete evidence that increased mobile phone usage was related with increased incidence of brain tumors.
b) Danish Study, a cohort study
Study was done in Denmark and no evidence for increased evidence of brain tumor, acoustic neuroma or meningioma was seen in patients using mobile phone upto 13 years.
c) Million Women Study, another cohort study.
Study conducted in UK found no association.
However there have been few studies which did show some association . The main reason for this discrepancy could be due to recall bias, inaccurate reporting and participation bias.
Though these studies failed to find any association between cancer and mobile phones but there are a whole lot of other health effects like defect in memory, learning, and cognitive function as well as increased risk of road traffic accidents.
